The ministry challenge

The church is known for what happens inside the building, not outside it.

The idea

Partner with schools and neighbors on 8-12 hands-on projects, then share a meal together.

Why it creates connection: Mixes ages and ministries on the same project team, working side by side.

Who it's for

Whole church + neighbors — a good fit for outreach and serving and church-wide ministry teams who want to reach the community, get people serving, create memorable experiences.

How it works

  1. 01

Six weeks out: pick projects with local partners.

  2. 02

Four weeks out: sign-up tables in the lobby, one per project.

  3. 03

Day of: morning kickoff, project teams, lunch together.

  4. 04

After: a story Sunday with photos from every project.

What materials are needed

This idea uses print, in-person, digital pieces in these formats: Event, Physical experience, Signage, Print, Social media. Prep takes about 10 hours; cost is $$.

Communication plan and suggested timeline

A simple rhythm for promoting it well. Put the dates on your church communications calendar so nothing becomes urgent.

  1. 4–6 weeks before

Brief your team and ministry leaders on Serve Your Neighbor. Lock the dates, the one-sentence invitation, and who owns each piece.

  2. 3 weeks before

Announce it from the stage and in your email. Start social posts and a website feature.

  3. 2 weeks before

Put printed pieces in people's hands — bulletin insert, cards, or posters. Share the sign-up or next step clearly.

  4. Week of

Final reminder across slides, email, and social. Personally invite people who are on the edge.

  5. During (1 Saturday)

Keep in-person touchpoints warm — greeters, tables, and leaders who know the plan.

  6. After

Say thank you, share one story of what happened, and point people to the next step.
